Organizing Your Makeup Vanity
Every few weeks we can’t help but feel the urge to re-organize our lives, specifically our skincare/makeup collection, which can at times get out of control. We have a few tips and tricks to share when it comes to approaching this task. Keeping this space organized will save you time and make getting ready in the morning a breeze!
STEP 1: Trash the trash!
Generally we like to do a big clean up every 3 months, which is usually around the time many of your products will be approaching expiry (hint hint, nudge nudge: MASCARA). In case you are really out of the loop, mascaras usually have a shelf life of 3 months if not less. Our eyes tend to have lots of bacteria on them AND we pump lots of air and bacteria into a tube of mascara, so they are one of the dirtiest items in our arsenal. If you have sensitive eyes, 2 months is the safer bet to avoid irritation. We have read tons of studies that show women tend to hang onto old makeup in case they use it later. So let’s be ruthless this spring and trash what’s trash! Also, before moving on to our next step, we take this opportunity to CLEAN OUR BRUSHES!
RULE OF THUMB: If you haven’t used it in over 6 months (or if it’s expired) you probably NEVER will ladies! TIP: Expiry date are usually only written on the packaging you throw away. So write the expiry date with a sharpie onto the bottle or jar when you buy it.
STEP 2: Categorize and Organize
You should have two sections to your space (wherever you get ready and store your makeup and skincare products).
Group 1
First, separate the things you use EVERYDAY and store them in a small bag, pouch, or bin that is most easily accessed!! ACCESS is key here so you aren’t rummaging through all your makeup to reach it every morning and night.
Group 2
Now you should be left with all the makeup you use sporadically for nights out and days where you are feeling a little more adventuresome. These items can be stored by category in a variety of ways. Most importantly, you should be able to pull out a category and see all the colors or options without having to mess everything up again. Tip: organize your lipstick shades upside down with the colors FACE UP. Brushes can be stored in a jar or a mug. Eyeshadows can be stored in a clear colored organizer which you can find at any big store like Walmart or on Amazon. You don’t need to spend big.
Keeping your ‘get ready’ space organized will make your morning and night routine so much more peaceful and efficient. You will also probably discover some lipstick shades you forgot you had hidden under all the clutter.
Our CEO uses mini baskets in her makeup drawers for eye shadow, lipsticks, rouges, brushes and weeds them out at the end of every season. She purchased hers at IKEA and Home Goods.

TIP: A great solution for those of you lacking counter or drawer space is to buy a shoe organizer for as little as ten dollars and hang it somewhere in your bathroom!
