FaceFood Friday: Avocado Spotlight

3 ways to use an Avocado: A Nutritious Seed, A face Mask, and a SNACK!

We truly believe in wasting as little as possible of every item we eat and it turns out that many things we eat have beautifying properties.  Our CEO even makes her own broth with the bones of the chickens we use to make healthy soups and FaceFood recipes for you!  Whether you want to eat your avocado or use it as a face mask, we have a solution for you.

Avocado Seed Benefits

One man's trash another man's treasure! Did you know that the SEED of an avocado (which most of us usually throw out) is the most NUTRIENT RICH part of this magical fruit!

  • It has 70% of the antioxidants, tons of soluble fibres and is high in potassium, calcium and magnesium.

  • It has been shown to prevent tumor growth, regulate intestinal function, and help with arthritis pain!

  • The antioxidants in the avocado seed can help rebuild the collagen in your skin as well as repair the damage caused by free radicals.

  • Another benefit - it helps improve the appearance and texture of your skin. Remember - beauty from the inside out!

How to eat it the SEED

It has a bitter taste so throw it in a powerful blender along with your smoothie ingredients.   You can either cut it up in small pieces or grate it into your blender,  or let it dry out on a windowsill for a few days before grating it and sprinkling it over a salad, in the dressing, or any meal of choice!  Blend the avocado seed with any combination of cucumber, green apple, ginger, mango or pineapple.  One avocado seed will serve four people. Just be careful you don't cut yourself trying to slice it open because they are very slippery!

Avocado Toast

Fresh bread, mashed avocado, chili flakes, lemon, and olive oil.

Fresh bread, mashed avocado, chili flakes, lemon, and olive oil.

Seriously one of the most delicious, nutritious, and healthy snacks you can fill up on.  Mash a ripe avocado onto a piece of toast and sprinkle olive oil on it (we use Olives en Folies).  Add a dash of salt and pepper. Now you have your BASIC BEGINNERS avocado toast.  We remember starting simple with this classic version of AVO TOAST.  BUT, once you dip your toe into the avocado toast waters, you will find yourself experimenting and adding all sorts of toppings and seasonings.  We love this so much because you can put your own unique spin on this snack and every time it takes on a new rainbow of delicious flavor.  Packed with healthy fats and antioxidants, this superfood snack has so many incredible properties.   Think of an avocado like a magical fruit that lubricates your insides and makes everything work more efficiently.   Recently we've been toping our avocado toast with cherry tomatoes and radishes for some spice!

Avocado Mask

If your not in the mood to EAT the avocado or your having a beautifying at home SPA day, we have just the thing for you.  A DIY mask.  What we love about these DIY masks, is that they are made from natural ingredients you can eat.  We love knowing that there's no harsh chemicals in them and that they are safe for use on sensitive skin!

  • 1/2 avocado

  • 2 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Simply mash and combine and the ingredients in a small bowl and apply to your face

  2. Let sit on your face for about 20 minutes.

  3. Rinse with warm water.

  4. Apply a moisturizer.

How these ingredients work

We don't chose these ingredients randomly!  We chose the avocado because it is packed with vitamin E, antioxidants, and healthy fats.  It also has a soothing and creamy texture perfect for face masks.  The honey cleanses and has natural antimicrobial/antibacterial properties that soothe inflammation and prevent future breakouts while brightening the skin.   Fun fact about honey:  it is the only food that truly NEVER expires and it should never be refrigerated (to prevent crystallization).  Hopefully some of it's magic can transfer into our skin.  The lemon juice is brightening, packed with vitamin C, and it evens the skin tone by getting rid of dark spots over time.

We hope we taught you something new about avocados or inspired you to try using them in different ways.  There's so much power in nutritious foods to help you glow from within. Happy FaceFood Friday!! Enjoy a healthy and wholesome weekend!!
